Talking About Ethnic Markets on KPBS-FM's These Days

I did my monthly food hour on These Days with host Maureen Cavanaugh on Oct. 5, talking about San Diego's wonderful ethnic markets. Chef Trey Foshee of George's at the Cove joined us.

We covered a lot of territory, and there were listener requests on the These Days website asking for a list of the markets we talked about. I provided them with my list -- not comprehensive but as thorough as I could get -- and it's here below. You can also read the transcript or listen to the show on kpbs.org.

Any suggestions for what we should cover next month? The obvious is Thanksgiving, but I'm open to other ideas.

They sell mostly African dry goods (spices, pantry items). There are a few Ethiopian/somalian places in this neighborhhod now. Nice to have so much diveristy so close to home.

  4. hi there - thanks for including seafood city (under Asian, but it caters mostly to Filipinos). Filipino markets tend to be forgotten or overlooked. :)

  5. Pata Negra on Garnet is a bit different from the other Hispanic markets in that it's products from Spain. It's run in conjunction with the restaurant a couple doors over.

  6. Just went to North Park Produce for the first time today. Wow do they have some of everything! Indian, Middle Eastern, great selection of fresh fetas, every kind of dried bean and lentil... definitely on my regular shopping list now that I live in the area.
